Matthew’s cheerful squeals from the backseat accompanied them on their way to town. Gage glanced more than a few times in the rearview to catch a glimpse of the little fellow. He looked as pleased as punch, beating a plastic block against his car seat. Affection, more than what was safe, wrapped like a ribbon around his ribs. There was no point in denying it. It was too late to stop it. Now what was he going to do?
Karenna, in the front passenger seat, inches away, was the cause. His defenses had been up, and he’d made his mind up not to like her. Not anymore.
So much for best-laid plans. He caught sight of the Welcome To Treasure Creek sign on the outskirts of town and eased off the gas for the reduced speed limit.
“Matthew seems a lot happier since you started holding him. Look at him. He’s babbled nonstop since you buckled him into his car seat.” She seemed honest and true, with her sincere blue eyes trained on him.
Be careful, he warned himself, or you might start believing in her.
“It’s not because of me. Matthew got too much fresh air.” He put on his best frown. He didn’t know what was wrong—he couldn’t remember frowning once since they’d gotten into the Jeep together.
“You’re wrong. Matthew has good taste,” she said, correcting him, stubbornly cheerful.
He was beginning to see that Karenna was stubbornly cheerful about everything.
“Taste? What taste. Matthew is currently sucking on a blue block.” He stopped for a flock of pedestrians crossing the road. The women in designer garb and the latest fashions looked like tropical birds against the rugged backdrop of wild mountains and rustic town.
“Admit it, Gage. You liked holding him.”
“Is it your job to give me a hard time?”
“No, but it is a perk.”
“That reminds me. I’m your boss. An employer shouldn’t have to put up with this.” Town was no longer the sane, quiet place he’d come to love. Everywhere he looked, cars took up all the on-street parking, idled in the street while pedestrians crossed, or waited for parking spaces.
Change. He didn’t like it. He didn’t approve of it, and it was happening all around him. Worse, he feared, it was happening to him, and he knew just who to blame. The woman sitting next to him with the girl-next-door charm.
“An employer, no,” she agreed. “But you and I aren’t merely boss and worker bee. We are also—”
“Don’t say it,” he ground out, as if he were in a temper. The trouble was, his bitterness was nowhere in sight. He wasn’t happy about that—not at all.
“Friends.” She uttered the one word he could no longer deny. Mischief animated her. How could she look cuter every time he looked at her? “The dictionary defines friends as being attached by esteem, someone who is not hostile, a kindly companion. I looked it up.”
“Smarty.” He told himself he wasn’t amused. And since he wasn’t charmed by her, either, he ought to keep the glare on his face and the glower to his personality.
